Driving Regional Transformation through Transformational Leadership

As the Head of Business Technology for Asia Pacific at Savills, managing technology strategy and solution delivery across 14 diverse countries is a complex challenge. To successfully drive digital transformation in today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) corporate landscape, my leadership approach is firmly anchored in the core pillars of Transformational Leadership, integrated alongside responsible and ethical governance.

True technology transformation relies entirely on culture, human behavior, and alignment. To execute large-scale enterprise initiatives, I guide my actions through the four primary components of transformational behavior: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration.

By serving as a strong role model (idealized influence) and communicating a compelling, unified technological vision (inspirational motivation), I inspire cross-border teams to overcome localized silos, reduce natural resistance to change, and exceed expectations. Concurrently, I use intellectual stimulation to encourage critical thinking and calculated risktaking, which breaks down the corporate risk aversion that frequently stalls innovation. Finally, through individualized consideration, I practice active empathy, celebrate diversity, and provide tailored mentorship to support individual growth and build deep organizational trust across distinct regional markets.

How do you see the role of business technology evolving within the real estate and property services industry in today’s rapidly changing digital environment?

From Support to Strategic Partner: Real Estate 3.0

The real estate sector is undergoing a profound structural shift, transitioning from a traditional, labor-intensive industry into a sophisticated digital ecosystem. We can trace this evolution through three distinct eras:

• Real Estate 1.0 (Labor-Driven): Characterized by manual workflows and a reliance on localized physical networks.

• Real Estate 2.0 (Information Era): Defined by centralized databases and CRMs, where technology served as a passive digital filing cabinet.

• Real Estate 3.0 (Intelligent Ecosystem): Driven by decentralized, AI-enabled, and democratized environments.

In this 3.0 era, technology has evolved from a back-office cost center into a strategic business partner. The integration of advanced AI solutions serves as a catalyst, acting as a sophisticated enterprise companion.

By democratizing data, we place predictive market insights and real-time analytics directly into the hands of frontline teams. This shifts our focus from reactive administration to proactive, data-driven decision-making. Far from replacing the human touch, technology as a partner frees our professionals to deliver higher-value advisory services, ultimately reshaping the future of global property management.

What are some of the biggest challenges organizations face when balancing innovation, operational efficiency, and user expectations across large-scale technology ecosystems?

The Velocity Trap: Balancing Innovation and Scale

The defining challenge for global IT executives is bridging the gap between hyper-speed AI innovation and standard enterprise governance. While market trends shift in weeks, large-scale deployment pipelines traditionally take months, creating a critical bottleneck between speed and stability.

Over-indexing on rapid innovation risks introducing fragmented, non-compliant platforms. Conversely, prioritizing absolute control breeds stagnation. Solving this paradox requires shifting away from purely technical management toward a multitiered leadership framework:

• Democratic Innovation: Empower business units to experiment responsibly within safe boundaries, utilizing analytics to drop time-to-market drastically.

• Transformational Governance: Build high-trust environments and clear ethical parameters to accelerate risk-assessment cycles and bypass bureaucratic friction.

• Humble Agility: Balance long-term vision with short-term, iterative execution, maintaining the transparency needed to pivot when experiments fail.

Ultimately, balancing innovation and efficiency is a leadership test, not a technical problem. To thrive in a world of exponential technological velocity, enterprises must stop viewing technology as a passive back-office tool and start treating it as a dynamic business partner.

Looking back on your career journey, what experiences have most influenced your perspective on leadership, collaboration, and decision-making in technology management?

Career Reflections on Technology Management

My perspective on technology management has been profoundly shaped by two contrasting environments in my career.

At Accenture, facing intense delivery pressures under tight deadlines initially left me overwhelmed. However, reflecting on those challenging dynamics taught me the critical importance of empathy, active communication, and psychological safety. I realized that sustainable technology leadership requires nurturing a positive work culture where teams feel genuinely valued and supported.

In stark contrast, my time as an Innovation Lead at a global retail giant (A.S. Watson) exposed me to an organization that cultivated innovation from top to bottom. Working closely with executive leadership, I witnessed firsthand how a customer-centric vision, big data integration, and a resilient "can-do" attitude could transform an entire enterprise. This environment championed calculated risk-taking and agile experimentation, proving that true leadership is about empowering others to drive disruptive thinking.

Combined, these experiences taught me that tech decisionmaking cannot exist in a vacuum. Impactful technology management balances robust strategic vision with inclusive, human-centric collaboration.

“We drive transformation by aligning technology with culture human behavior and ethical governance empowering diverse teams to innovate responsibly and deliver sustainable value across Asia Pacific.”

What advice would you offer to emerging technology leaders looking to build resilient, future-ready digital strategies in an increasingly connected business landscape?

Building Future-Ready Digital Strategies

To build resilient, future-ready digital strategies, emerging leaders must shift from an individualized technology focus to a broader organizational and societal context. True digital resilience is not just about adopting the latest technology stacks; it is about cultivating an inclusive, ethical, and transformational leadership approach.

First, foster a culture of agile experimentation. In a volatile business landscape, leaders must balance cautious risk aversion with calculated risk-taking, viewing failures as critical data points for continuous personal and organizational growth.

Second, align your technology strategy directly with humancentric virtues. Build stakeholder trust and psychological safety within your teams to unlock genuine creativity and knowledge sharing. A strategy is only as resilient as the people executing it.

Finally, break down traditional department silos. Actively collaborate across internal business divisions to ensure IT acts as a "business whisperer," transforming technology investments into sustainable business priorities and societal value. By blending strategic technical vision with strong value-based leadership, you can build an agile, collaborative enterprise capable of thriving through constant disruption.

In the APAC business environment, companies have become increasingly concerned about how employee motivation affects productivity, retention, collaboration, and performance. The complexity of markets, employees’ expectations, the economy, and culture makes employee motivation management a complex business issue. Businesses in APAC may require a strategy that takes into account the variations among countries, yet has the same organizational objectives. Motivation management consulting can help businesses consider all these aspects, comprehend the dynamics of their workforces, and formulate appropriate plans that link employee motivation with other objectives of the company. This will help them to avoid the use of universal motivational programs and, instead, determine what motivates the employees to continue contributing and how this motivation can be supported by leaders and managers. Understanding Motivation across Diverse Markets The APAC region encompasses developed nations, emerging nations, and fast-growing business hubs, leading to considerable differences between the structures and expectations of the labor force in each nation. Employees can be different in their communication preferences, approach to hierarchy, motivation tactics, and career expectations. These factors can affect the perception of motivational programs in different countries. What can be an effective strategy in one country may need to be modified in another. The first step that a motivation management consultant takes usually involves assessing the work environment of the employees of the organization. Some techniques that the consultant could employ to learn about the motivational factors in this process include conducting employee surveys, interviews, analyzing performance data, conducting discussions with leaders, and evaluating the organization. Factors such as workload, management, career, recognition, teamwork, learning, and communication may be analyzed. The goal here is to uncover any hidden patterns in the process, not to deal with motivation as a one-dimensional variable. Firms can also use the results to distinguish short-term motivation factors from long-term motivation factors. Monetary incentives could affect certain behavior; however, employees can also be motivated through empowerment, meaningful tasks, career development, constructive criticism, and involvement. This knowledge will allow the firms to adopt strategies that achieve their short-term goals and motivate employees at the same time. Connecting People Strategies with Business Goals Motivation management is even more useful when it is tied directly to the performance of the business. Consultant services can assist the leaders in making their business priorities into actions that the workers will be able to follow. For instance, if the focus of the organization is on the improvement of customer service, then the motivation techniques can target issues related to quality of service, reward system, training and feedback. In case of productivity being a priority, then leaders will evaluate workflow, roles, expectations and process improvements. “If the focus of the organization is on the improvement of customer service, then the motivation techniques can target issues related to quality of service, reward system, training and feedback. In case of productivity being a priority, then leaders will evaluate workflow, roles, expectations and process improvements.” Leadership behavior is another significant component. Managers motivate their employees through their behaviors and communication styles. Consultants' engagements allow managers to evaluate their management skills and adopt effective leadership styles that work best in various team settings and markets. It may include manager training, communication styles, coaching techniques, and recognition systems. Career development is yet another factor that could enhance motivation since it would provide employees with insight into how their capabilities could be improved in an organizational setting. The APAC companies that compete for specialized employees would be able to improve employee motivation through a series of learning paths, mobility programs, mentoring, and clear advancement criteria. Using Data to Improve Motivation Strategies The use of technology makes it possible for businesses to be able to evaluate the sentiments of their workforce and track changes. Through digital surveys, employee feedback systems, performance management systems, and workforce analytics, among others, an organization may be able to get information regarding engagement levels, participation, turnover, and other metrics at work. Data does not replace personal interaction, but can form a valuable basis for decision-making. Companies can compare data about feedback from different divisions, offices, roles, or employee categories without violating any privacy requirements. Frequent assessments can help to understand whether a new program implemented by management generates the desired reaction. This ensures that motivation becomes an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Implementation is important since well-crafted motivational programs may fail due to a lack of clarity regarding roles and responsibilities and inconsistent application by managers. Consultant teams can help with formulating an implementation plan, a process for communicating the program to employees, a review process, and specific goals. Ownership makes it possible for leaders to evaluate how the implementation process is going and adjust if necessary, based on the evolving needs of the workforce or changing circumstances in the business. Businesses that operate in APAC need to consider some important aspects when managing their motivation, such as relevance to local culture, regular measurements and execution. Consultation services may provide a different view on the issue, as well as assist managers in the process of developing their own strategies for the issue, according to their business needs and culture. Those solutions which are most likely to be successful will take into account good leadership, appropriate recognition, career growth, communication and proven workforce practices. ...Read more
