It is easy to keep adding apps when a person runs their fingers across an iPad. Each one adds a function, but there comes a point when another app is no longer enough. The system itself needs an OS upgrade.

June Parker uses that analogy to explain what happens when leaders move into bigger, more senior roles. New skills may help them meet the demands of a larger position, but the transition can also require changes in how they think, make decisions and operate.

Career Pivots, a leadership transition specialist, starts by understanding what the new role requires, then identifies the capability, behavioural, mindset and identity shifts needed to operate successfully at that level. Its methodology combines horizontal development - skills such as delegation, communication and problem-solving - with vertical development that challenges how leaders think, the perspectives and values they bring, and how they see themselves in the role.

The approach is built around five levels of leadership transition, from individual contributor to first-time leader, then leading through leaders, functional leadership, the C-suite and ultimately the CEO role. Each transition brings different expectations, relationships, responsibilities and ways of operating.

“Success at a new level needs different thinking, relationships and identity. We help leaders recognise what needs to change and develop their capacity to lead differently,” says Parker, co-founder and chief impact officer.

Clients rarely come to Career Pivots seeking help with a leadership transition. Instead, they arrive with the symptoms. A technically strong professional may struggle to lead a team, a senior leader may remain too focused on operational detail, or an internally promoted CEO may find that previous ways of working no longer fit the role. Career Pivots identifies these gaps and helps leaders bridge them through targeted development.

That makes diagnosis the starting point. Depending on the engagement, Career Pivots may use 360-degree feedback, team interviews, assessments, performance reviews and triads to understand the leader, their environment and the outcomes expected from the development journey. As the company works business-to-business, success is defined upfront. By the end of the engagement, the leader, sponsor and direct manager assess whether the intended capability uplift and behavioural changes are visible in practice.

That approach is evident in one engagement involving a senior leader known for solving problems who was promoted to oversee multiple managers, where success depended on thinking more strategically and developing others.

His instinct, however, was still to step in and fix problems himself. Through coaching, he reconsidered where he derived satisfaction and recognition from his role, shifting from being the fixer to becoming a developer of others. As he empowered his managers to solve problems independently, he stepped back from operational detail, contributed more broadly across the organisation and built a stronger leadership team.

The relationship underpinning that work is intentionally demanding. Parker begins with a chemistry check, balancing empathy with challenge. Leaders need enough trust to discuss difficult issues, but enough tension to confront the behaviours holding them back. By holding trust and tension together, Parker creates an environment for candid conversations while maintaining the accountability needed to turn insight into lasting change.

Most engagements run for six or 12 months, with development connected directly to the leaders work. Session summaries capture key areas discussed and agreed actions, while follow-ups and coaching nudges reinforce accountability. Career Pivots also provides access to its AI coaching tool beyond the formal engagement, extending reinforcement while keeping responsibility for continued development with the leader. This approach has contributed to Career Pivots being recognised among the Top Executive Coaching Services in APAC 2026.

Today, the company is applying its transition model earlier in the leadership pipeline, helping organisations assess leadership readiness and strengthen succession pipelines before promotion. Career Pivots is developing a model that combines leadership-readiness and behavioural assessments with coaching, bite-sized learning, peer learning, AI and internal capability-building to prepare leaders for the specific demands of the next level.
